Eighty percent of people who donate to the Humane Society of the United States think the animal activist group “misleads people into thinking that it supports local humane societies and pet shelters,” according to a survey conducted by HumaneWatch.org. Just 1 percent of HSUS’ donors surveyed list “farm animal protection” as their primary reason for supporting the group.
In addition, 74 percent of HSUS’ donors give to the group either to help pet shelters or reduce the number of animals euthanized each year, yet 90 percent of those surveyed were unaware that HSUS gives just 1 percent of its budget to local pet shelters.
According to HumaneWatch.org, nearly 50 percent of the HSUS donors surveyed said they are less likely to support the group, now that they know it gives so little to local pet shelters.
