Recent congressional action on the farm bill followed by some down time in Washington has provided opportunity to dig deeper into the legislation and where it may be headed. Mary Kay Thatcher, American Farm Bureau Federation’s farm policy expert, provided updates on the AgriTalk radio program. Thatcher suspects that something similar to the Durbin-Coburn amendment, which was added to the farm bill on the Senate floor and reduces the crop insurance premium subsidy by 15 percent for farmers with an annual adjusted gross income of $750,000 or higher, will end up in the House version as well.
Ultimately, it’s up to the House Rules Committee, but Thatcher expects between 10 and 20 farm bill amendments to be offered for consideration on the House floor. Numerous amendments on crop insurance, food and nutrition programs, and rural development are anticipated.
