SC Farm Bureau Federation
President David Winkles
on Governor’s Ag Commissioner Appointment

The Governor is to be commended for carrying out such an exhaustive search for an interim Commissioner of Agriculture. Farm Bureau appreciates the Governor’s openness about the qualifications the agriculture industry feels are essential for a person in this position to hold in order to best represent the state’s second largest industry. Farm Bureau asked that the Governor consider appointing a person with production agriculture experience who has the interest of agriculture at heart.

We believe Governor Sanford fulfilled that request when he appointed Hugh Weathers to serve as interim Commissioner of Agriculture. Hugh is a successful dairyman and a loyal and active Farm Bureau member. He has served us well as the chairman of our state legislative committee, the chairman of our political action committee, and was Farm Bureau’s choice to represent agriculture on the SC Conservation Land Bank Board. Hugh will do a great job filling the role of Commissioner of Agriculture. I look forward to working with him in his new role and offer him any support Farm Bureau can offer.
