SCFB Foundation Awards Six Scholarships

The SC Farm Bureau Foundation recently awarded five $1,000 scholarships and one $500 scholarship for the 2002-2003 academic year to sophomores, juniors, or seniors pursuing degrees in agriculture or agriculture related majors.

Recipients were evaluated based on character, demonstrated leadership abilities, and dedication to agriculture or related fields.

Upon announcing the names of the recipients, Foundation President David Winkles commended the students for their outstanding records.

“Agriculture desperately needs the type of high caliber leadership these students have exhibited through their studies and other activities.  It is our hope that these scholarships will encourage young people to develop the skills necessary to become part of the leadership structure in agriculture…a key industry in South Carolina,” he said.

The SCFBF scholarship program, designed to provide scholarship assistance to young people of South Carolina farm families, honors three former SC Farm Bureau presidents—Robert Coker, E. H. Agnew, and Harry S. Bell.

The program also honors SC Farm Bureau leaders such as J. W. Wamer, Jr., and C. B. Mitchell—both former members of the SCFB Board of Directors and former members of the SCFB Executive Committee—and Betty DeWitt, former Chair of the SCFB Women’s Committee and former member of the American Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.
