YOUTHS ATTEND STATE AG TOUR

A select group of high school juniors and seniors from around the state recently participated in the 2002 South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation (SCFB) Ag Awareness Tour.

The annual SCFB tour featured a number of diverse agricultural operations, including Christmas tree, dairy and beef cattle, turkey, peach, produce, greenhouse, and hydroponic farms.

SCFB President David Winkles said, “Our goal through these tours is to help young people change their perception of agriculture.  Many people believe that clothes come from the mall and food comes from the grocery store, without any thought of the role farmers play in providing life’s essentials.  The Ag Awareness tour helps connect the products we wear and eat to the people who produce them, our farmers.  The tour also helps expose young people to potential future careers in agriculture like marketing, sciences, management, communications, economics, et cetera.”

Calling the tour participants “the potential new blood of agriculture,” Winkles said, “we need to tap into their enthusiasm to keep South Carolina’s agricultural industry a vital part of the state’s economy.”

The tour was coordinated with the assistance of state and county Farm Bureau Women’s Committees, who, in addition to working with this event, sponsor a variety of educational and promotional programs each year.

SCFB is a non-profit organization designed to promote the interests of agriculture in South Carolina.  There are are 130,500 member families statewide, with more than 33,000 of those families directly involved in South Carolina farming.

Persons interested in supporting agricultural education are encourage to contact the county Farm Bureau office or Faith Lawrimore at the South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation for additional information.
