Supplemental Coverage Option for Winter Wheat

Supplemental Coverage Option for Winter Wheat

Tuesday, USDA announced the implementation of the new Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) that was authorized in the 2014 Farm Bill.

SCO will be available for the 2015 crop year for producers of corn, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, soybeans, spring barley, spring wheat, and winter wheat.

SCO is only available to farmers who sign up for the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program.  Those who select the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) programs at the county or individual levels are not eligible for SCO.

Since winter wheat producers will have to sign up for SCO this fall prior to having all the details on PLC and ARC, they may (for this year’s crop only) purchase SCO and withdraw coverage later without penalty on any farm where they have elected to use ARC for winter wheat by the earlier of their acreage reporting date or December 15.

A fact sheet on SCO is attached, as is a map of availability for wheat.
